As part of Horizon 2020, European Comission is funding scalable innovation challenges leveraging Distributed Ledger Technology (such as the one used in  blockchains)
What? More precisely advanced grants of 1 000 000 euros for innovation using DLT in its public and open form to share, store and secure transactions or data (involving fewer intermediaries).
Why? In the wake of public attention for bitcoin, to try to go further by generating positive social change through decentralisation and desintermediation. 
Examples: demonstrating the origin of materials, supporting fair monetization of labour, e-administration, political processes, decentralized platforms, property management, ...
Who? Natural or legal persons without restriction of origin and presenting their source codes in Open Source Licences.
When? The call was published in May 2018 and will end in September 2019.
